An ampoule is a small sealed vial which is used to contain and preserve a sample, usually a solid or liquid. Ampoules are commonly made of glass, although plastic ampoules do exist, which are used.to store vaccine, serum and oral liquid, etc.
Modern ampoules are most commonly used to contain pharmaceuticals and chemicals that must be protected from air and contaminants. They are hermetically sealed by melting the thin top with an open flame, and usually opened by snapping off the neck.
Glass ampoules are fragile. If improperly operated, extra glass shards or slivers may be created when snapping the neck. The breaking strength of the ampoule neck should be suitable so that the unclean break can be avoided. Otherwise the operators may be injured and even worse the shards or slivers may enter the human body with the liquid medicine and do harm to human health. Therefore it is necessary to control the breaking strength of the ampoules through breaking force test.

According to ISO 9187-1, the breaking forces of the ampoules should conform to the standard, which are listed in the following table. The fracture surface of ampoule should be flat and free of cracks after breaking force test. This article provides simplified procedures for breaking force test of ampoules with Link Testing’s LTS-05 Auto Tensile tester.
