Testing proposal for bursting pressure of aluminum-plastic film packaging for pet food

The bursting pressure test is the overall impact resistance and extrusion capacity of the packaging bag. Regular and timely monitoring of the bursting pressure of the packaging bag can effectively prevent the packaging bag from being damaged due to insufficient toughness or poor sealing of the packaging material when it is impacted, dropped, or squeezed by external forces. It is of great significance to reduce the breakage rate of the finished product packaging in the circulation. Pet food is a food specially provided for pets and small animals. It is a high-end animal food between human food and traditional animal food. It is generally packaged in bags or iron cans. For non-vacuum packaged pet food containing a certain amount of gas, the finished product packaging will be squeezed, dropped, or hit by external forces during transportation, sales, and other circulation links. The pet food or gas inside the package will have a greater impact on the packaging bag body and seal. If the packaging material has poor flexibility or the seal is poorly sealed, the bag is prone to breakage. By testing the bursting pressure of the packaging bag, the weak parts of the packaging and the overall force level can be verified, providing a reference for enterprises to control the quality of packaging materials, improve heat sealing processes, and adjust packaging processes.

 

Test methods and instrument

 

At present, there is no standard for the bursting pressure test of soft plastic packaging in China. The test process mainly refers to the American standard ASTM F1140/F1140M-2013 "Test method for resistance of unconstrained packaging to internal pressure damage".

Intelligent Sealing Instrument LTMFY-06S

 

In this test, the LTMFY-06S leakage and sealing strength tester developed and produced by Linktesting was used to detect the bursting pressure of the aluminum-plastic composite film packaging bag samples of pet food.

 

LTMFY-06S is professionally applicable to the quantitative determination of the sealing strength, heat sealing quality, bursting pressure and sealing leakage performance of various soft packaging parts and aseptic packaging parts formed by various heat sealing and bonding processes; analysis of the compressive strength and bursting strength of the materials used in soft packaging bags; quantitative determination of the sealing performance, connection and release strength of various plastic anti-theft bottle caps, and stress strength of the materials; evaluation and analysis of the sealing performance, pressure resistance and bursting resistance of the bottle body; quantitative determination of the overall sealing performance, compressive strength, connection strength of the cap body, release strength, sealing strength of heat-sealed edges, and bonding strength of various hoses.

Test principle: The equipment is designed based on the positive pressure test principle, that is, the gas pressure inside the sample is greater than that outside. By filling a certain amount of gas into the sample packaging and monitoring the pressure changes in the packaging in real time until the packaging bag breaks, the pressure value tested at this time is the bursting pressure of the packaging, or filling the sample with gas to a specified pressure, and then placing the sample in water or using other methods to check whether the sample is leaking. In either case, under the impact of the gas inside the package, the weaker link of the package will first rupture or leak. Therefore, the location where the package bag ruptures or leaks can also be used to infer the weaker part of the package bag.

 

Test sample and test process

Test sample: Aluminum-plastic composite film bag for a certain brand of pet food packaging. Test process:

(1) Use a puncture head to form a circular hole on the surface of the packaging bag, use double-sided tape to cover the sealing gasket on the circular hole formed, so that the center position of the sealing gasket coincides with the circular hole, and carefully insert the probe of the equipment through the center position of the sealing gasket and the circular hole into the sample, ensuring that the seal near the insertion point is good and no air leakage occurs.

(2) Start the test, adjust the flow valve to control the pressurization speed, so that the gas is slowly filled into the sample, and the sample expands until it ruptures or leaks.

(3) Record the pressure value when the sample ruptures or leaks, and record the location of the rupture or leak.

 

Test results and analysis

A total of 3 bags of samples were tested in this experiment. The bursting pressures of the samples were 40.5 KPa, 41.8 KPa, and 40.7 KPa, respectively, and all of them broke at the side seals of the samples.

The leakage and sealing strength tester is a professional testing device for testing the bursting pressure of soft plastic packaging. It can truly reflect the pressure resistance of the packaging bag, and through the test, the weak links of the overall packaging can be found, providing a basis for the improvement of subsequent processes.
