Cartons are most common packaging form, which are widely used in the transportation of products. Cartons can protect the products and makes it easy to store and transport the products. Compared with wooden cases, woven bags, plastic boxes and other packaging forms, cartons have many outstanding features including light weight and small volume, meanwhile cartons are easy to make and low in cost.

Corrugated cartons are usually used for their unique structure, which can bear the heavy load of products and resist the external impact. With the development of packaging industry, cartons with colorful printings become more and more popular in market. Gloss oil or film is coated on the surface of colorful cartons. However, if the manufacturing process is not controlled properly, the cartons with colorful printings may collapse in stacking process, which may cause inconvenience to the storage and transportation of the products.

There are several reasons for the collapse of cartons including design of cartons, stacking number and coefficient of friction. This article discusses the influence of coefficient of friction on the collapse of cartons. It can be easily understood that if the coefficient of friction between the surfaces of the cartons is too low, the cartons are liable to slip in stacking process and the cartons will collapse. Therefore, it is necessary to test the coefficient of friction of the cartons.

This article provides a simplified test method of coefficient of friction of cartons for your reference. The test specimens are cardboards that are used to produce cartons and the testing instrument is Link Testing’s LTMXS-06 Coefficient of Friction Tester.

The tests can be performed according to the following procedures.

  1. Cut 3 specimens (63mm x 63mm) from the sample material. Cut another 3 specimens (80mm x 200mm) from the sample material. The specimens should be flat and free of creases or dust, which may influence the coefficient of the cardboard.
  2. Paste the square specimen on the bottom surface of the sled and fix the rectangular specimen on the test plane with sample clamp.
  3. Set test parameters and select test standard (e.g. GB 10006-88). Then start the test.
  4. The total test time is 42 seconds, 6 seconds for static coefficient of friction test and 36 seconds for dynamic coefficient of friction test. When the test is finished, the results of static coefficient of friction and dynamic coefficient of friction will be displayed automatically.
